Yankee Doodle Dandy
Two former presidents of the United States and signers of the Declaration
of Independence died on July 4th, 1826. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, once
opponents and later friendly correspondents, died on the 50th anniversary of the
signing of this historic document. Adams' reported last words were "Thomas
Jefferson survives." However, Jefferson had preceded Adams in death a few
hours earlier.
Another patriot associated with the Fourth of July was showman George M. Cohan,
whose life was celebrated in the movie, "Yankee Doodle Dandy" starring
James Cagney.
